Media release – GWRDC appoints new Executive Director

The Hon Rory McEwen, Chair of the Grape and Wine Research and Development Corporation (GWRDC), today announced, on behalf of the GWRDC Board, the appointment of Dr Stuart Thomson as Executive Director of GWRDC.

‘Dr Thomson has extensive experience in leading strategic research and development programs in both government and commercial organisations. He, together with the GWRDC management team, will ensure that the Corporation’s investments in research, development and extension address the research priorities of the Australian government and the grape and wine sector’, said Mr McEwen.

‘Stuart joins the corporation at an exciting time, as the GWRDC’s new five-year Strategic Plan is being implemented. He will be instrumental in fostering and further enhancing the existing relationships with our key stakeholders, the Commonwealth, Wine Grape Growers Australia and the Winemakers’ Federation of Australia’, said Mr McEwen.

Dr Thomson will commence Monday 10 December 2012. GWRDC’s General Manager, Kate Harvey will continue as Acting Executive Director until this time.

Dr Thomson is currently the Research Director at CRCMining. He obtained his doctorate in Physical Chemistry from the University of New South Wales and subsequently worked as a researcher in a number of organisations including the Max Planck Institute in Germany. More recently, Dr Thomson has held senior management roles in government, not-for-profit, and commercial organisations.

GWRDC invests in and directs research, development and extension (RD&E) along the whole value chain ‘from vine to glass’ to support a competitive Australian wine sector.

We collaborate with our key stakeholders to coordinate and direct our investments to best address the sector’s RD&E priorities. GWRDC is funded by grapegrowers and winemakers, who pay levies on the annual winegrape crush, and the Australian Government, which provides matching funds.
